What We Do

We’ve been really pleased to see the sector upping its game on demand management, working with Waterwise, who have shown great thought leadership and acted as a delivery catalyst for change in this space over the last decade.

What We Do

Climate change and population growth are increasing pressure on water resources in the UK – research (Water UK, 2016) has shown that drought will affect all areas of the UK in coming years. Waterwise is helping communities, businesses and governments to understand the value of water and use it wisely so that we have enough now and in the future. Ambition and innovation are at the heart of our work – our own, and that which we urge in others.

Waterwise was founded in 2005 and has become the leading authority on water efficiency in the UK and beyond. We are an independent, not-for-profit organisation. We receive funding from Waterwise Supporters and Affiliates across the UK water sector and beyond, and from sponsorship, research and delivery projects.

How We Work

Waterwise’s role is to innovate, to develop and test new ideas and to help demonstrate practical water efficiency actions. We try and work at the highest level possible, so if we can change the law to get action then we will, but we are happy to get our hands dirty too and often we have to undertake practical demonstration projects! We always try and work in partnership and to help other organisations and communities to deliver water efficiency projects. We also help make connections and build partnerships. In short we do whatever is needed to promote water efficiency.

A bit more about our work

Waterwise Supporters fund all our work, enabling us to continue to be the leading water efficiency voice for water efficiency in the UK. Please click here if you’re interested in becoming a Waterwise Supporter.

Waterwise people and communities

Our aim is to support water companies and others on best practice and innovation in behaviour change, customer engagement and community participation. We work with these groups to innovate and pilot new approaches to engage customers and influence behaviour.

Waterwise technology and innovation

We act as a knowledge hub on innovative products and approaches. We aim to incubate, develop and matchmake innovation and innovators with other partners, including through product and service accreditation schemes (e.g. Waterwise Checkmark).

Waterwise policy and governance

We drive the policy and regulatory agenda across the UK to enable ambitious and innovative water efficiency. We guide, steer and respond to government and regulatory developments across the UK. Often there is no ‘ownership’ of water efficiency issues and we provide the interface between government, regulators, water companies, social enterprises and others.

Our wider work

  • Promotion of water efficiency – within communities; at executive and delivery level; within government, through a high-profile stakeholder presence
  • Raising water efficiency and drought resilience awareness in the media and via social media
  • Networks and access to stakeholders and other innovators
  • Events – annual conference, awards, innovation exchanges and project- specific events

Waterwise Checkmark

Waterwise Checkmark provides the accreditation of water-efficient products, services and businesses.

You can access the Waterwise Checkmark Terms and Conditions here and you can access the application form here.

If you have any queries regarding the Waterwise Checkmark, please contact info@waterwise.org.uk.

Influencing Attitudes

Waterwise has conducted work on; understanding behaviour, understanding change (Evidence Base), understanding audiences (Tap into Savings), and intervening to create change.

Waterwise Training

Waterwise Training produces fully trained and qualified experts in water efficiency advice and home retrofits. Two qualifications in water efficiency and home retrofits have been developed, to respond to sector demands. The qualifications establish a baseline of standards for this growing sector, providing vital skills and improving the quality and consistency of practical water efficiency.

We are in the process of moving Waterwise Training online. This will enable larger groups of employees to be trained more efficiently, and we encourage organisations to consider using it as part of their in-house training programme to embed cultural change and strategic commitment to water efficiency.

Shaping Policy

We drive the policy and regulatory agenda across the UK to enable ambitious and innovative water efficiency. We guide, steer and respond to government and regulatory developments across the UK. Often there is no ‘ownership’ of water efficiency issues and we provide the interface between government, regulators, water companies, social enterprises and others.

Waterwise’s Water Efficiency Strategy for the UK

The strategy was developed in consultation with the water sector – including Waterwise supporters and the Water UK-supported steering group. It sets out a blueprint to deliver a vision of a UK in which all people, homes and businesses are water-efficient, and where water is used wisely, every day, everywhere. Read more about the strategy and the ongoing work of the Water UK supported Water Efficiency Strategy Steering Group in delivering the actions.

Consultation Responses

Waterwise responds to a variety of consultations from Government and water companies in addition to engaging through meetings and providing evidence to support policy changes. Read our latest consultation responses here.
