Units of learning – Level 3

UNIT ONE

1. Understand how to communicate with residents in their home

  • State why a household assessment is necessary before fitting water efficiency
retrofit devices
  • State the essential elements of an introduction on arrival in a home
  • Explain to residents the information they need to provide or that will be collected
during the assessment
  • Understand how best to obtain information from residents and explain why it is
being collected
  • State how household assessments differ according to tenure, property type and
metered status
  • State when and how residents’ preferences should be taken into account during
an assessment
  • Explain what residents should do if leaks are identified

2. Understand the prerequisites of household water efficiency assessments

  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to ensure water quality and compliance
with Water Regulations and Byelaws
  • Explain the influence of hot water heating systems on water efficiency
  • Explain the influence of water pressure on water efficiency
  • Describe how to measure flow rates
  • Describe how to determine the level of water pressure
  • Describe how to determine toilet cistern flush volumes

3. Understand how to conduct a household water efficiency assessment

  • Explain how to carry out a systematic household water efficiency assessment
  • Describe how to conduct a property pipe leak check
  • Describe how to identify leaking taps and showers
  • Describe how to identify leaking toilets
  • Describe how to determine whether a toilet is water-efficient
  • Describe how to determine whether a tap is water-efficient
  • Describe how to determine whether a shower is water-efficient
  • Explain how appliances should be considered during an in-home water efficiency
assessment
  • Explain how outdoor water use should be considered during a household water
efficiency assessment

UNIT TWO

1. Understand how to achieve water-efficient taps

  • Identify common water efficiency retrofit devices for bathroom and kitchen taps
  • State how retrofit devices may differ between kitchen taps and bathroom taps
  • Understand how to determine the suitability of a device for a specific tap
  • Identify the tools necessary to retrofit a tap
  • Explain how to install a tap retrofit device
  • State how to test an installed device
  • Describe problems that may arise during or after installation of a tap device
  • Describe how to uninstall a tap device

2. Understand how to achieve water-efficient toilets

  • Identify water efficiency retrofit technologies for toilets
  • Determine the suitability of a retrofit device for a specific toilet
  • State toilet types that are not suitable for retrofit
  • Identify the tools necessary to retrofit a toilet/fix a leaking toilet
  • Explain how to retrofit a toilet device
  • State how to test an installed toilet device
  • Describe problems that may arise during or after installation of a toilet device
  • Describe how to uninstall a toilet device

3. Understand how to achieve water-efficient showers

  • Identify water efficiency retrofit technologies for showers
  • Determine the suitability of a retrofit device for a specific shower
  • State shower types that are not suitable for retrofit
  • Identify the tools necessary to retrofit a shower/fix a dripping shower
  • Explain how to retrofit a shower device
  • State how to test an installed shower device
  • Describe problems that may arise during or after installation of a shower device
  • Describe how to uninstall a shower device

4. Understand what information should be communicated back to residents

  • Explain installed retrofit devices to residents
  • Explain why some retrofit devices were not installed
  • State non-device related changes that residents should be encouraged to make
to further improve water efficiency
  • Explain what residents should do if a problem arises after the installation of a
retrofit device
