23 October 2006: Who says water and energy don't mix Print

The UK water industry consumes 3% of the total energy used in the UK. Saving water in your home also saves energy. As part of Energy Saving Week, organized by the Energy Saving Trust, everyone should think about doing their bit to save energy and water.

‘Each person in the UK currently uses about 150 litres of water every day. This has been rising by 1% since 1930,’ says Jacob Tompkins, Director of Waterwise. ‘
If everybody reduced their water consumption by one third together we could save 1% energy. Every time you turn on the tap at home, think about where your water comes from. Achieving the high quality of drinking water that we all expect in the UK uses a lot of energy for treatment and pumping.’

Taking shorter showers will reduce the amount of energy and water that you use. An easy way to do this is by using a shower timer. A substantial amount of energy is used to heat the hot water used by your shower so taking a shorter shower will save you money on your energy bill in addition to saving water. Water heaters account for nearly a quarter of your home’s energy use. Having a shower instead of a bath uses two thirds less water and energy.

Choosing water and energy efficient products will not only save you water and energy, but will reduce your bills and in turn protect the environment. Waterwise has launched a Marque to highlight water saving products. This is the first scheme of its kind in the UK which means that from the middle of next year consumers will be able to identify water saving products more easily within retail outlets.
