26 March 2007: Waterwise the fish washes and dries his socks underwater Print

Today, Waterwise has launched a fun video called ‘Waterwise the Fish’.  The video is the first in a series of short videos jointly funded by Waterwise and the Greater London Authority to promote the efficient use of water.

The 30 second clip, entitled ‘Washing Day’ shows a goldfish washing one sock at a time in his washing machine before hanging them up to dry in his goldfish bowl!  Each time he does this the water level falls in his bowl until it becomes dangerously low.  His friend ‘Guppy the Goldfish’ then explains he should always use a full load in his washing machine.

The video has been released as part of one of Waterwise’s water saving initiatives for World Water Day.  Consumers can help reduce water wastage by making small behavioural changes like always using a full load in your washing machine and dishwasher.

‘Each person in the UK currently uses 150 litres of water every day.  This consumption is not sustainable in the long-term. It is easy for us all to reduce our water consumption by around 20% at little or no cost’ says Jacob Tompkins, Director of Waterwise, ’Despite the recent rainfall it is still imperative that we continue to use water wisely. The UK’s fresh water supplies are not limitless. Climate change, along with population growth and shift mean that we can’t simply continue to use a third more than many of our European neighbours. The most effective long term way to stop future water shortage is for all of us to make small behavioural changes and to choose water efficient products.’

Before starting your washing machine or dishwasher, wait for a full load - you'll save money on energy and water. And just like dishwashers, washing machines labelled 'A' on energy efficiency tend to be more water efficient.  Look out for the Waterwise Marque which highlights those machines which are particularly water efficient

Notes to Editors
1. Waterwise is an independent, not for profit, non-governmental organisation focused on decreasing water consumption in the UK by 2010 and building the evidence base for large scale water efficiency. We are the leading authority on water efficiency in the UK. We sit on the UK Environment Minister’s Water Saving Group alongside the water industry and regulators.
2. Our aim is to reverse the upward trend in how much water we all use at home and at work by 2010.
3. We work together with key partners in the water companies, governments (UK, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and local governments), manufacturers, retailers, NGOs, environmentalists, regulators, agriculture, business, domestic consumers and the media.
4.  Waterwise founded the Waterwise Marque in October 2006 which is the first award scheme of its kind in the UK. We award the Marque annually to water using products which highlight water efficiency or reduce water wastage.  We are currently calling for entries until the end of January 2007.
