| 20 March 2009: Switch to a meter today on World Water Day and save water and money |
|
|
Waterwise is urging people to save water and save money on World Water Day, and everyday, by switching to a water meter, investing in water efficient products and adopting water efficient behaviour. Each person in the UK uses 150 litres of water per day, and as much as 1/3 of this is flushed down the toilet or runs down the plug hole unnecessarily. Waterwise believes that each person could cut their consumption by 50 litres simply by making small behaviour changes, investing in low cost water efficient products and switching to a meter. Only 30% of England and Wales are on a meter, meaning that they receive lower bills for using less water. World Water Day is an international day to celebrate freshwater and The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. This year’s theme is "Shared Water - Shared Opportunities" and focuses on transboundary waters. In the UK we do not suffer from the problem of international water reserves, but we can all waste less water and reduce our water consumption and by switching to a meter we can also save money. Jacob Tompkins, Managing Director of Waterwise, says that ‘World Water Day is a fantastic opportunity for us all to think about our water use, and find ways to reduce the amount of water we waste on a daily basis. Turning the tap off when you brush your teeth, taking a shorter shower, and watering the garden with a watering can rather than a hosepipe are very simple ways to reduce our wastage.’ For more information on how to save water and to look at a full range of water saving products, please visit the Waterwise website www.waterwise.org.uk To switch to a water meter please get in touch with your local water company (if you need help with this please email Waterwise on
