Waterwise welcomes the recent report by the European Environment Agency which looks at water resources across Europe in the context of water scarcity and drought and stresses there is still more to be done if we are to live in a world without environmental stress. With the World Water Forum in progress this week and World Water Day coming up this Sunday 22 March water efficiency should be top of everyone’s mind to achieve water and energy savings and better environmental protection.
‘This report is a great start – it helps raise attention to some of the issues and increases the awareness of the need for water efficiency. It also emphasises the need for proper detailed analysis on how to adequately achieve a balance between supply and demand in Europe. Now is the time to take action to ensure we have plenty of water for the future’ says Jacob Tompkins, Managing Director of Waterwise. In the UK there is a need for everyone to be water efficient as our personal water consumption has been increasing by 1% every year since 1930. This coupled with climate change and the increased number of floods and droughts that we have seen in the past few years means that there is less water available and our current consumption is not sustainable in the long term. Waterwise has been successful at promoting water efficiency and changing consumer behaviour around water use in the UK, supported by good quality research and a strong Evidence Base for water efficiency. Waterwise has worked with organisations like the Kingfisher Group and Proctor and Gamble to deliver water efficiency on the ground directly to consumers through large scale campaigns and provision of water efficient products. Strong partnerships like these are essential to delivering water efficiency in the UK and we believe similar models would work well across Europe. Notes to Editors Waterwise is an independent, not for profit, non-governmental organisation focused on decreasing water consumption in the UK by 2010 and building the evidence base for large scale water efficiency. We are the leading authority on water efficiency in the UK. We sat on the UK Environment Minister’s Water Saving Group alongside the water industry and regulators. Our aim is to reverse the upward trend in how much water we all use at home and at work by 2010.
