Waterwise enews – Monday 6 October 2008
Welcome from Jacob Tompkins, Director of Waterwise
Thanks for all the positive feedback from our first enewsletter, it's been great to see that you find our work as interesting as we do! In the last few months we have been really busy over here at Waterwise. Our website has had a lot of redevelopment with new a new facts section, new water campaign section and new research pages. We have made extensive comments on the water companies draft water resource management plans - our responses can be found under 'consultation responses' on our policy section of the website. We have also been busy with sponsorship for our 2009 Waterwise Conference, get in touch if you want to hear more about our conference!

Water efficiency in a low carbon economy - 30 October 2008
Waterwise East, ICE, IMechE and Anglian Water present Water Efficiency in the Low Carbon Economy, a one day conference that looks at technological solution to pressures on water resources at the regional level, with particular reference to implications for energy use. It will be held at the Airspace Conference Centre at Duxford on Thursday 30 October.

Evidence Base
Over the past year Waterwise have been building an Evidence Base for Large-Scale Water Efficiency as part of our work for the Water Saving Group.

Interim reports were published in
March 2008 and summer 2008; the final report will be published on the 20th of October.

One of the aims of the Evidence Base is to produce a set of scenarios that UK water companies can refer to in order to develop water efficiency programmes, and that can be used to inform water company investment with particular relation to the Periodic Review 2009 (PR09).

Hampshire Water Festival
Waterwise teamed up with Big Green Smile at the Hampshire Water Festival on Saturday 9 August to provide expert advice to visitors on how to save water within the home. Water saving products were also available for purchase. Despite the rain, the stand was busy all day with locals learning about new ways to save water.

Water consumption in Hampshire is amongst the highest in the country with the average person using around 160 litres of water per day (10 litres more than the UK average of 150). Hampshire is also defined as severely water stressed by the Environment Agency. When we consider that our water use has been rising by about 1% every year since 1930, this is not sustainable in the long term.

If everyone in Hampshire saved 10 litres a day, easily achieved by turning off the tap when brushing teeth it would save a total of 16.9 million litres, enough to supply everyone in Winchester with water for one day. Only through water efficiency can we ensure that we achieve a sustainable supply for the future. Each person wastes around one third of the water they use each day and this can easily be saved by making small changes in behaviour and installing water efficient products.

Waterwise East

A water efficiency seminar for housing associations was held at the Waterwise East offices in Thetford on 30 September. Eighteen delegates representing eleven housing associations listened to presentations from Brian Hooper of Waterwise, John Griggs of BRE and Andrew Pitt of Waterwise East about a wide range of water efficiency issues. Following the success of the event, there are plans to run similar technical seminars around the East of England.

Jacob Tompkins spoke at the Inspire East Annual Conference on 29 September and enthused an audience of professionals involved in the sustainable communities agenda in the East of England about water issues and the need for water efficiency.

Work on the Water Efficiency Design Guide is continuing. Research on public attitude to water efficiency has been commissioned with Savills. Design work has commenced on the website and promotional materials. The Design Guide will be launched in December.

Posters
Waterwise has teamed up with a designer Henrique Komatsu to create some posters to promote water efficiency. The posters can be downloaded from our website and put up in homes, offices and at events to promote water saving messages.

Waterwise at the BBC Summer Festival
Waterwise sponsored the BBC Summer Festival in June this year. Jacob presented to interested listeners at the Celebrity Theatre which was hosted by Joanna Yarrow. In addition, Waterwise was on hand to help out at the Coolaworld stand where visitors could recycle their old mobile phones.

Research
Research for DEFRA has shown that energy efficiency ratings are not suitable proxies for water efficiency information for dishwashers and washing machines, and that the water consumption of these appliances should be addressed. Read the report

The Waterwise Website
The Waterwise website has undergone some changes since the last enewsletter. The facts section has been re-written giving you more information on why we should save water. The Water Saving Devices pages have also been updated. The research pages have undergone a complete new look to show you more clearly what our research team have been up to!

This project focuses on reducing water demand in social housing. It is a partnership project between Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, Raven Housing Trust, Sutton and East Surrey Water, Environment Agency and Surrey County Council, and is being funded by the Government's New Growth Points Scheme. The overall aim is to reduce water consumption using a range of water saving appliances and an educational programme, in order to offset demand from new houses to be built in the area.
