Waterwise enews – July 2009
Welcome from Jacob Tompkins, Managing Director of Waterwise
Summer is well and truly here now with a heatwave sweeping across most of the UK this week. Not only is it nice to have some hot weather, but it is also a great opportunity for us to remind you that there are loads of water saving tips you can adopt in and around your home to reduce the amount of water we waste on a daily basis. In this hot weather (and all year round) it is best to water your plants early in the morning or late in the evening when evaporation rates are at their lowest. It is also ok for your lawn to go brown, it will turn back green again when the rains come. Water plants with a watering can, rather than a hosepipe, and consider investing in a water butt to collect rainwater to water your plants when the heatwave is over.

Waterwise launches the SHARE project funded by GLF
Waterwise has recently launched SHARE, Social Housing Action on Resources and Environment, a programme that will deliver real water (and other resource) savings – both technological and behavioural – in three regions of England. We will be working with Global Action Plan and Kathryn Rathouse Social Research to develop the programme, and with Sutton and East Surrey Water, Raven Housing Trust, Severn Trent Water, Whitefriars Housing Group, South West Water (to be confirmed) and Devon and Cornwall Housing Association to deliver it. The two-year programme is being funded by Defra’s Greener Living Fund. Click here for more information.

Waterwise welcomes the Walker Review

In June, Waterwise welcomed the interim report of the Walker Review of Charging for Household Water and Sewerage Services. The report sets out a comprehensive blueprint for the government on the sustainable use of water, reflecting many of the asks in Waterwise's UK manifesto, launched earlier this year. Waterwise welcomes the recommendations on a move to full metering, but will continue to press for this within a particular timescale, namely, by 2020. The water efficiency recommendations are extremely welcome, including on a labelling scheme, where Walker proposes that "Government should work with Waterwise, water companies, manufacturers and retailers to ensure voluntary schemes are effective or to decide whether a mandatory scheme is needed." Waterwise will continue to work closely with the Walker Review team, and government, in the run-up to the Final Report in the autumn.
