Waterwise enews – March 2010
Welcome from Clare Watters, Waterwise East Coordinator

Hi, I'm Clare and I'm the Waterwise East Co-ordinator. I was appointed in April 2009, and my job is so varied that I still feel I’ve got a lot to learn. I work in Waterwise’s only regional office, and am the sole employee of Waterwise East, which means I am a very busy lady! Waterwise East focuses on reducing the impact new development will have on already scarce water resources by encouraging water-efficient developments in the East. Anyone involved in a new development can access support via our Water Efficient Buildings website and through training events and 1-2-1 support. This supports Waterwise at a national level, as the principles Waterwise East recommends can be applied to any building in the UK.

FINAL CHANCE to register for the Waterwise conference
Registration for the Fifth Annual Waterwise Water Efficiency Conference is still open. The conference is being held in Oxford on 22-23 March 2010. Contact Victoria Higgins, Communications Executive if you wish to book your last minute space.
Waterwise report shows potential water savings of 25% to help meet the challenges of climate change
Waterwise has launched Phase II of ‘The Waterwise Evidence Base for Large-scale Water Efficiency in Homes’ which builds on the first report released in October 2008 and continues to demonstrate the savings that can be achieved through water efficiency in homes. The report highlights that water savings of, on average, 42 litres per property per day (around 15%) are possible by installing a range of water-efficient products in homes and through encouraging customers to make behaviour changes.
Plumbers for water-efficiency!
As 86% of our housing stock in 2050 will be existing homes, it is important we improve the water-efficiency of these. Plumbers are important stakeholders in this area. Waterwise East is working with the Chartered Institute for Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) in a variety of ways, notably via developing a pilot training session for plumbers that would count as a required module for those wanting to join their “GreenPlumb” scheme.

Water efficient buildings website

The Water Efficient Building website is aimed at planners, developers and any other stakeholders involved in water-efficient buildings. Developers appreciate the fact that all the information they need is available in the Design Guide, so they don’t have to hunt around and several have commented that they appreciate the fact that there are lists of water-efficient fittings that are already available. Planners say the Planner’s Guide is useful to remind them of the detail of water standards and policy.

Tap into Savings Launch
Tap into Savings was launched on Friday 12 February at the Belfry shopping centre in Redhill. The event was launched by Peter Ainsworth MP, 2009 Environmental Parliamentarian of the Year. The Tap into Savings community initiative will help people in nearly 1,000 homes in Redhill and Merstham save water and energy, as well as money on their household bills. Waterwise Consultation Responses
In February Waterwise responded to the CLG consultation on The Code for Sustainable Homes and the Energy Efficiency Standard for Zero Carbon: “Sustainable New Homes – the Road to Zero Carbon”, and the DECC consultation on Extending the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) to December 2012. Studies into whether Code water use targets are practicable
Achieving Code levels relies on a specific calculation method. A project to investigate the actual water consumption in CSH dwellings is being undertaken, which aims to determine any difference between design consumption and actual consumption. This project is being undertaken by the Building Research Establishment (BRE), and has been funded by several parties, including Waterwise East. Properties around the UK are being monitored, including two in the East of England. Further information on the results from this project will be available late January 2010.

Waterwise teams up with the edie awards
Waterwise has joined forces with environmental website edie.net to promote the 2010 Awards for Environmental Excellence. edie is Europe’s most popular website for those with a professional interest in protecting the environment and as part of its service to the sector runs an annual awards scheme. As a leading authority on water efficiency in the UK, Waterwise was happy to team up to promote edie’s water award which sets out to highlight projects which push forward the sustainability agenda when it comes to water use.
