| Waterwise enews – Friday 16 January 2009 |
| Welcome from Jacob Tompkins, Director of Waterwise |
Happy New Year from all of us at Waterwise! I hope you all had a good festive season and have made some water efficient new year's resolutions! The new year is going to be busy for us at Waterwise. We have our Marque closing soon, and the conference fast approaching in April. We can now announce that GROHE are the principal sponsor of this year's conference and it will prove to be one of the best conferences yet. Our research team have been very busy starting projects and are soon to be publishing several documents on water and energy use in the home, including a review of evidence on personal washing.

| Evidence Base |
|
The final report of the Waterwise Evidence Base for Large-scale Water Efficiency in Homes has now been published and can be downloaded from the Publications section of our Research webpages here.
As part of Waterwise’s contribution to the Environment Minister's Water Saving Group, which concluded in November 2008, Waterwise collated and analysed several water company led water efficiency projects and produced an in-depth report that revealed the potential savings of and the various approaches to undertaking efficiency programmes. A number of scenarios for potential low-cost, high-yield, large-scale water efficiency programmes were developed.
The report shows that large-scale retrofit is possible and an economically viable option to meet future water needs alongside new resource development; however, it is clear that delivering large-scale programmes requires partnership working and that it is difficult for water companies to deliver these programmes alone.
Waterwise are currently exploring options for keeping the Evidence Base up-to-date, and for expanding and improving it. Comments on the report are welcome; please email Joanne Zygmunt.

| Water and Behaviour Change eNewsletter |
In February, Waterwise in collaboration with Kathryn Rathouse Social Research will launch an eNewsletter focussed on water and behaviour change. The newsletter will highlight water saving behavioural change initiatives led by water companies, government, NGOs and other groups; research related to encouraging sustainable water using behaviours; and announcements of publications, events and funding opportunities. We welcome subscribers posting news and requests for information. To encourage collaboration, we hope that as many as possible will also opt in to a contact list that will be circulated to subscribers. The eNewsletter will be emailed out about twice a month, with the first eNewsletter in early February. If you would like to add any items to this issue, please email our research team. We look forward to your contributions!

| Energy and Carbon Implications of Water Use and Efficiency |
|
As part of our ongoing work in examining the links between water and energy, Waterwise will be releasing three new publications in February. The first will be a new version of our components of domestic demand table, which will now include estimates of the carbon, energy use and energy and water costs of water using activities in the home. We will also be publishing our report, Water and Energy Implications of Personal Washing Behaviors and Technologies, which reviews in detail current evidence on bath and shower use in the UK. This project was funded in part by the Energy Saving Trust. Lastly, Waterwise will be publishing a new report by Kathryn Rathouse Social Research, funded by the Pilkington Energy Efficiency Trust, which examines the public’s views about saving water in order to save energy, focusing particularly on showering. Keep an eye on our Publications page here.

| Waterwise joint project with Energy Saving Trust |
January will also see the start of a three-year joint project with the Energy Saving Trust that aims to develop and pilot a combined water and energy advice network within the UK. This project is being funded through the European LIFE+ programme. More details coming soon to our website.

| Plumbing practices under review |
|
A joint Water UK and Waterwise roundtable was held to identify issues around poor plumbing installations and practice on 7 January 2009. It was agreed the current situation needed to be made easier for consumers to understand. An over-arching 'brand' name for recognised businesses, employing competent trained plumbers, was proposed, similar to the now defunct 'Corgi' registration for gas installers. It was also agreed that the sale of 'non-approved' water fittings needed to be addressed by government. The proposals will be taken forward as a voluntary initiative by the parties who attended. Water UK and Waterwise will host a follow-up roundtable in six months.

| Water efficiency targets and the evidence base |
Waterwise has undertaken work on linking the OFWAT Water Efficiency targets to the evidence based study. In particular Section 8 of the OFWAT document sets out figures for the estimated savings and uptake rates of water efficiency appliances. A full review of these figures could be undertaken and would involve a detailed analysis of data from the 20 Water efficiency projects used in the evidence based study. Whilst it is planned to carry out further work on the evidence based data including the provision of addional data as it becomes available this will take time and will form a major part of the second phase of the evidence based study.
Meanwhile Waterwise has carried out a fast track short term analysis of the data in consultation with the Water Companies and provided some revised figures to OFWAT. They will be discussed further at the next Water Company network meeting on 28 January 2009.
