Waterwise enews – February 2010
Welcome from Victoria Higgins, Communications Executive at Waterwise

Hi, I'm Victoria and I'm Communications Executive at Waterwise. At the moment I am busy organising the Fifth Annual Waterwise Water Efficiency Conference, which is being held on 22-23 March in Oxford. Delegate spaces are selling out fast, and the final line up of speakers has been announced. Regisatration closes on Sunday 7 March, so register now to avoid disappointment. I am also busy updating the website with new work that we have been doing recently, like the Retrofit Best Practice Guide. Another project keeping me busy at the moment is the Waterwise Marque, which is closing for applications on Friday 26 February, so please read the criteria and enter with your water saving products.

Local Authorities require water-efficient development
Waterwise East has worked intensively with North Norfolk and Huntingdon District Councils on developing water-efficiency policies for inclusion in their Local Development Frameworks. Results include North Norfolk’s Policy EN6, which will result in all new homes in their area being built to have a predicted water consumption of 120l/pp/pd immediately and 105l/pp/pd by 2010.
The “Water and planning” section of the Water Efficient Buildings website has information to support other planners to do the same.

Sponsorship opportunities for the Annual Conference
We have a limited number of opportunities left to sponsor the Fifth Annual Waterwise Water Efficiency Conference to be held at Keble College, Oxford in March. Also available are opportunities to place adverts in the conference programme, and inserts in the conference bags. Please contact Chris Philpot, Communications Director for further information.

Waterwise response to the Defra and Welsh Assembly Government Consultation on the Cave Report
Waterwise welcomes the acknowledgement in the consultation document of the future challenges of climate change and growth in demand, and the need to ensure that water resources are managed more sustainably and efficiently, but is disappointed that the consultation document does not directly address some of the specific recommendations set out in the Cave Report to deliver this. Waterwise also gives examples of how innovation is not just about new money and new technologies, but is also about driving systemic change through new types of partnerships, new regulatory approaches and new services – including through water efficiency. Waterwise response to the final report of the Walker Review
Waterwise hailed an independent report as an important step toward valuing water, in the face of climate change. The report sets out a series of very welcome, strategic steps to help make the economy climate-resilient – including an important role for water efficiency, and a fairer way to pay for our water. Tenant in water efficient home only pays £9.16 a month for water!
Waterwise East has worked with several Housing Associations improving their water specification, and case-studies have been developed from several of these. One such scheme was Hastoe Housing Association’s development in Feltwell. The scheme included water-efficient fittings and rainwater harvesting systems installed in each property. Although some problems with the rainwater harvesting system were experienced, overall tenants were happy because of the cost-savings they achieved (with one thrilled tenant reporting he only pays £9.16 a month for water), and said they would recommend Rainwater Harvesting to others. Water & Energy Network
Waterwise has set up a Water and Energy Network group on LinkedIn

Purpose: The Water and Energy Network aims to be a forum for discussion, innovation and collaboration around the links between water and energy.

Description: Climate change and population growth are highlighting the links between water and energy. Energy generation requires a lot of water for cooling and likewise heating, treating and distributing water requires a lot of energy. Greenhouse gas emissions are linked to all of these. And the first effects of climate change will be floods and droughts.
