England and Wales

Consumer Council for Water
Operating in England and Wales, the Consumer Council for Water was established in 2005 to provide representation for water and sewerage consumers.


Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra)
Defra’s core purpose is to improve the current and future quality of life. It works to bring together the interests of farmers, environment, rural economy, food, air, and water. It does this through integration of environmental, social, and economic objectives and championing sustainable development as the way forward for Government.

Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI)
The DWI regulates public water supplies in England and Wales. The DWI is responsible for assessing the quality of drinking water in England and Wales, taking enforcement action if standards are not being met and appropriate action when water is unfit for human consumption.

Environment Agency
Set up under the Environment Act of 1995, the Environment Agency is the leading public organisation for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales. Its job is to make sure that air, land and water are looked after by everyone in society.

Ofwat
The Water Services Regulation Authority is the economic regulator of the water and sewerage industry in England and Wales. Its role is to seek value for consumers whilst providing incentives and encouragement for companies to achieve world-class quality service.

Envirowise
Envirowise offers UK businesses free, independent, confidential advice and support on practical ways to increase profits, minimise waste and reduce environmental impact through a government-funded programme.

Natural England
Natural England works with people, places and nature, to enhance biodiversity, landscapes and wildlife in rural, urban, coastal and marine areas; promoting access, recreation and public well-being, and contributing to the way natural resources are managed so that they can be enjoyed now and in the future.

Scotland

Scottish Environment Protection Agency
Scotland’s environmental regulator and adviser, responsible to the Scottish Parliament through Ministers. As well as its role in controlling pollution, it works with others to protect and improve the environment. Around half of its funding comes from the Scottish Executive, with the other half charged to operators that it regulates.


Scottish Executive
Responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Scotland, including health, education, justice, rural affairs, and transport.


Water Industry Commission for Scotland

The Commission's statutory task is to determine price limits for Scottish Water based on the lowest reasonable cost of achieving ministerial objectives for the water industry.

Waterwatch Scotland
The collective name for the organisation comprising the Convener of Scottish Water Customer Consultation Panels and its five regional panels set up to represent the interests of Scottish Water's customers, investigate customer complaints, and report on customer issues.

Northern Ireland

General Consumer Council for Northern Ireland
The Consumer Council was set up by the government in 1985 and is funded by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment. It is an independent consumer organisation for Northern Ireland. It runs information and education campaigns. It also helps individual consumers with complaints about planes, trains, buses, ferries, electricity, natural gas and coal.
