On Wednesday, 9 December 2009 Waterwise held its first Masterclass on Changing Water Using Behaviours, which was sponsored by Defra and the British Psychological Society. Over forty delegates from the water industry attended the all day event, which Waterwise was able to offer free of charge. Kirsten Reeves, Head of the Sustainable Behaviours Unit at Defra, set the scene for the day by describing some of the barriers to and motivators for water wise behaviours. Click here to download Kirsten’s presentation.

John McAlaney, psychologist at the University of Bradford, and Kathryn Rathouse, social research consultant to Waterwise, provided an overview of social norms campaigns and described how these principles could be used to encourage sustainable water use. In the afternoon, participants heard from Bas Verplanken, psychologist at the University of Bath, and Paul White, Director of The Social Marketing Practice, about habits and how they may be broken. Bas’ presentation may be downloaded by clicking here and Paul’s by clicking here.

Sarah Darby, from the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University, finished off the day by providing participants with an overview of how the energy industry has used better, more informative feedback to encourage energy saving. Click here to download Sarah’s presentation.
