Waterwise enews – November 2009
Welcome from Ike Omambala, Technical Research Manager at Waterwise

I'm Ike Omambala, Technical Research Manager at Waterwise. I joined Waterwise 8 months ago and it has flown by! It’s a small team - only 11 of us and there is a real buzz about the office. Everyone is really dedicated and hardworking but at the same time there is a refreshingly light and friendly feeling about the place. So what does my role involve? My main responsibility is updating and improving the Evidence Base for Large Scale Water Efficiency in Homes. This involves working closely with the water companies and other stakeholders to ensure that we learn as much as possible about the costs and benefits of the domestic water efficiency retrofitting they carry out. We then work to ensure that this evidence is used to improve industry practice, regulation, and policy. I am always on the look out for opportunities to carry out research to improve our understanding of the technical and social aspects of water efficiency. But although most of my work is in research, this regularly feeds into the policy and communication work that Waterwise does. So like everyone else here at Waterwise I have my fingers in many pies at any given time!

Innovation and Water Efficiency - a technical symposium
Waterwise’s first technical symposium, supported by UCL and Neoperl UK Ltd, will bring together key technical decision makers from water companies, retailers, manufacturers, homebuilders, developers, energy companies, independent consultants and NGOs to discuss innovation and water efficiency. The symposium is being held at UCL on Tuesday 10 November.

Waterwise support from Water Minister

The Minister was full of praise for Waterwise’s valuable contribution, to date and in the future: he said “Defra enjoys a strong and positive working relationship with Waterwise, and I am glad to support the valuable work they are doing on promoting water efficiency.” To see the full transcript, including quotes from the Minister supporting specific Waterwise work, please click here.

Shower power – how long do you take?
‘If you are spending more than 10 minutes in the shower what are you doing in there’ says Kriss Akabusi September 2009. Watch Kriss Akabusi shower in less time than it takes to boil an egg. Are you up to the shower challenge?
Kriss Akabussi’s shower challenge is brought to you by Shower power – an educational campaign promoting shorter showering delivered by Waterwise and Talisman Communications on behalf of 12 UK water companies. Click here for more information.

Team up with Waterwise
Waterwise is always interested in working with other organisations in order to conduct joint research or communicate water efficiency. This may range from sharing and publicising information together to a long term partnership. If this interests you please contact us.

Guide to the BMA's Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme
In September 2009 Phase II of the BMA's Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme was launched. Phase II includes an enhancement of the 5 categories to 7, with the inclusion of shower handsets and grey water recycling systems, supporting elements, retail stockists database, scheme partners and supporting point of sale material. CIPHE and Waterwise work together for water saving initiative
The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering and Waterwise are to work closely together to encourage the safe and environmental use of water. Plumbing and heating engineers spend more than 150 million hours a year in front of customers so are well placed to communicate key water safety and conservation messages.

The CIPHE hold details of qualified plumbers on the Registered Plumber register which can be searched online by post code at www.ciphe.org.uk and plan to launch a GreenPlumb register soon for professionals with recognised competencies in renewable and sustainable technology.

Energy Saving Trust
The Energy Saving Trust’s recent Energy Saving Week campaign provided a number of top tips to help people stop wasting time, energy, money and water. This was supported by a press release issued by Waterwise. To find out more about this year’s campaign visit the Energy Saving Trust and see what you can do.
